Fiber Laser Cutting Speed Chart and Parameter Guide

Use these fiber laser cutting speed charts as a practical reference for carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum and other sheet metals. Most operators and buyers compare 1.5kW to 20kW machines first; higher power charts are included for capability reference and larger projects.

Do not copy chart values directly into production. Different control systems, cutting heads, laser sources, fiber core diameters, gas supply and machine condition all require small tuning around the same cutting logic.

Choose a Machine Power From Your Cutting Requirement

For most sheet metal shops, the practical buying range is 1.5kW to 20kW. Start from the material and thickness you cut every day, then use the chart to compare speed, gas type, nozzle and focus. Very high power machines are useful to study, but they should be selected only after checking production volume, gas cost, machine structure and service conditions.

Power range Best fit What to check in the chart Next step
1.5kW to 2kW Thin sheet, entry production, repair shops and budget-sensitive users. Check thin carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminum speed before overbuying power. View 1500W chart
3kW Small and medium shops cutting common sheet metal with a lower purchase cost. Compare 1-6 mm stainless steel and carbon steel. Check oxygen vs air cutting on carbon steel. View 3000W machine
6kW General fabricators that need faster thin sheet cutting and more flexibility on medium plate. Check whether the speed gain on your daily thickness justifies the higher laser and gas cost. View 6000W chart
12kW Production shops cutting thicker carbon steel, stainless steel or aluminum more often. Look at piercing, focus, nozzle and gas pressure. The same cutting speed can fail if piercing is unstable. Watch cutting videos
20kW High-volume production where faster medium/thick plate cutting saves real shop time. Compare stable production thickness, not only maximum cutting thickness. Ask for setup help
30kW and above Large factories, heavy plate work and buyers evaluating future high-power capacity. Use these charts as reference only. Machine rigidity, optics, gas system and service ability matter more. Discuss high power machines

How to Use This Fiber Laser Cutting Speed Chart

For production work, a stable cutting speed with clean edge quality is more important than the maximum speed in the chart. If your machine does not cut through, leaves burrs, burns the edge or gives unstable piercing, check the full cutting setup instead of changing speed only.

Start with material

Confirm material type, thickness, coating and surface condition before copying any parameter.

Match gas and nozzle

Nitrogen, air and oxygen need different pressure, nozzle type and focus strategy.

Test and tune

Cut a small sample, inspect dross and edge color, then adjust speed, focus and pressure step by step.

  • Material type and surface condition affect absorption, dross and edge color.
  • Laser source, cutting head, lens condition and nozzle center affect real cutting speed.
  • Assist gas purity and pressure are often the reason the same chart works on one machine but not another.
  • For thick carbon steel, maximum cut thickness is not the same as stable production thickness.

Assist Gas, Focus and Nozzle Quick Guide

Many cutting problems come from mixing the gas, focus and nozzle setup. Use this as a simple starting point before checking the detailed chart.

Setup Typical material Nozzle Focus Common issue
High-pressure nitrogen Stainless steel, aluminum, thin carbon steel Single-layer nozzle Usually negative focus Burrs if pressure, focus or speed is wrong
Compressed air Carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum where edge color is acceptable Single-layer nozzle Usually negative focus Edge oxidation or dross if air quality is poor
Low-pressure oxygen Carbon steel, especially medium and thick plate Double-layer nozzle Usually positive focus Over-burning, blowholes or black edge if oxygen is too high or speed too slow

Need Help Setting Your Fiber Laser Cutting Parameters?

Send your machine power, material, thickness, assist gas, current speed, focus, nozzle and cutting problem. We will suggest a starting parameter range or tell you what to check first.

    Common Cutting Problems to Check

    Cannot cut through

Check speed, focus, nozzle center, lens condition, gas pressure, gas purity and whether the machine power is suitable for the thickness.

    Dross or burrs

Reduce or increase speed in small steps, then adjust focus and gas pressure. Heavy dross can also come from a damaged nozzle or dirty lens.

    Burning or black edge

For oxygen cutting, too much oxygen or too slow speed can over-burn carbon steel. Check focus and nozzle selection too.

3000w Fiber Laser Cutting Speed Chart

This is Cutting speed chart of GYC laser cutting machine with Raycus 3000w fiber laser cutting machine, just take it as reference, I believe it will help to to get some ideas of the 3000w laser cutting capacity,

As you can see the Maximum cutting carbon steel up to 20mm 22mm, but the cutting speed is 0.5meter/min, very low, the the red color just mean it can cut, but not in good production quality, normally if you have production of 20mm carbon steel, we recommend you 6000w or higher power to get the faster cutting speed.

The fastest cutting speed of 3000w 28-35meter/min, with high pressure nitrogen gas or pure air from the air compressure, pressure up to 10 bar and more.

And you can also get some reference for the focus point, different focus point will effect the cutting quality. Normally positive focus point for cutting carbon steel, and negative focus point for cutting stainless steel.

I’ve noticed that some operators distinguish cutting parameters by MATERIAL, which helps them avoid mixing up NOZZLES and FOCUS SETTING.
I would suggest distinguishing them by ASSIST GAS, which is clearer and easier to remember:

    1. High-pressure air / nitrogen
    High cutting speed
    Single-layer nozzle
    Negative focus
This setup is the same whether you’re cutting stainless steel, carbon steel, or aluminum.
Different materials have different hardness, purity, and laser absorption rates, so the cutting parameters will vary slightly.

    2. Low-pressure oxygen

    Used with a double-layer nozzle
Proportional valve precisely controls the gas pressure
Too much oxygen is not acceptable — it can cause OVER-BURNING and BLOWHOLES
Mainly used for carbon steel cutting
Parameters vary slightly depending on material and hardness
The focus is usually positive focus
However, when laser power reaches 12 kW and above, negative focus may also be used to achieve higher cutting speeds.
You can see in the parameter tables that, for the same thickness of steel, oxygen cutting with negative focus can achieve faster cutting speeds.
